Joseph Leduc: Member of the Month and Photo of the Month Winner

For those of you who are new to NoBS( and there are quite a few of you), each month you get the opportunity to select among your peers whose image will be the photo of the month. The winner also becomes our member of the month. It's quite an honor given the enormous talent on NoBS Photo Success. If you'd like to participate (and we hope you do) then please keep an eye on SarahM's posts as she moderates the voting and selection process.

This month our winner is Joseph Leduc. Who is Joseph? Well, here in his own words is his story.

"I have been involved in photography since Grade 9 high school. The school had a camera club and darkroom but no faculty member that had the knowledge or experience. I was an army brat and my dad was a supply sergeant. I asked my dad to help and he contacted the Base photo section who sent out a young private who showed us how to load process film and develop images. He also provided lots of bulk Tri-x and photographic chemicals to get us going. High school was fun because I got to photograph for the year book, all the school games, events, and cheerleaders. I then attended a local college where I was the school audio visual coordinator/ photographer.

After school, I started working for one of Canada’s largest catalogue/commercial studios and retired after 34 years. I never went to work, I went to play.

I was also a member of the Canadian militia for over 35 years. Starting as a private and working my way up to Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) before retiring as a Captain. I was an infantry officer but was attached to public affairs for most large exercises and photographed dignitaries, events and posters.

During my career in the catalogue company and the military reserves I got married had a family and ran a photography business on the side photographing weddings and events.

I photograph everything and anything which includes a little commercial, some weddings, dance schools, events, business, etc.

I am a member of the Greater Toronto Council of Camera Clubs where I am a presenter and judge for salons and interclub competitions.

I run a photography studio club where we rent an auditorium once a month and photograph. I teach lighting, posing, and all things photography.

I find photography more exciting now than ever because of the wonderful tools and software available that was not even dreamed of when I started without a meter or through the lens focusing. The rules of good photography still apply. Good composition; lighting, exposure and colour are just as important today as before digital.

I stumbled across two wild and crazy guys in Toronto that had a show of before and after images projected onto a screen and was blown away by the enhancements along with the great photography. Rob and James were doing digital boot camps before digital was accepted by the rank and file photographers. If I had found NoBs and had an internet 30+ years ago boy would things have been easier and different!

I have been a member of NoBs forever and started posting an image a day just to challenge myself and others to make us pick up our cameras and shoot often. I do not expect nor do I post images everyday because of busy lives and problems that just crop up. I do not care about the subject whether a senior, a wedding, the family vacation, a dog or macro of flowers. If CC is requested it will be NoBs CC all the way.

Just post images. I have witnessed new members join that were in the learning stages of their photography careers that have just blown me away by the leaps and bounds by which they have grown and the quality of their product. NoBs has been a wonderful educational tool and a forum full of members willing to share. I love to be able to share images and stories in real time with members from other countries and see that photography is very alive and well everywhere.

About the Photo of the Month

The image selected for POTM was captured while walking my dog around the pond around our house. I often carry my camera and a small pack with my SB800 and Nikon 70-200 lens. I had my 90mm Tamron on my D300 with my fibre carbon tripod looking for willing subjects. I was shooting bees at

F14 and 200th of a second. I used my on camera flash set to -3 stops for a small amount of fill and my SB 800 at – ½ power to help pop out my subject."
